National Wildlife Refuge Association celebrates 50 years of conservation - National Wildlife Refuge Association

As part of the year-long party, the Refuge Association reveals a memorial 50th anniversary logo and launches a number of campaigns and events to honor the incredible progress of the last five decades, while inspiring action for the future.

The Refuge Association was founded in 1975 by retired refugees who recognized the need for a strong, independent spokesman for the National Insole System for Wildlife.

Over the past 50 years, the Refuge Association has:

  • Supported the strategic growth of the refuge system: In 1975, the refuge system included 378 refugees spanning 34 million acres. Today, it includes over 850 million Acres, including Marine National Monuments, making it the largest conservation system in the world.

  • Waited for critical funding and policies: Ongoing matches to defend the country of refuge from chronic underfunding and from harmful proposals, including threats to iconic landscapes such as Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) and Georgia’s Okefenokee NWR.

  • Strengthened grassroots network: We expanded and strengthened Refuge Friends Groups the passionate, on-the-earth volunteers who contribute time, resources and energy to support local refugees and connect society to nature.

To commemorate this milestone, the Refuge Association launches #50Wildyears, a long -standing campaign that highlights the legacy of the Refuge Association and the critical need for continued advocacy of the refugee system.

“We are proud to reflect over five decades of protecting, promoting and improving America’s wildlife interruptions and the countless species they maintain,” said DesirĂ©e Sorenson Groves, president and CEO of National Wildlife Refuge Association. “But even though the refuge system has taken care of the American people over the years, we have not taken care of it. It is facing chronic underfunding and threats that each year challenge its integrity and danger to wildlife, it protects. The refugee association knows national wildlife refugees is the battle of ensuring that these special conditions are relieved and demanded and demanded, and the laws of wild spaces for future generations. be together to secure these special places and they are repayable and in demand and benefits.

The National Wildlife Refuge Association’s 50 -Year anniversary is a celebration of resilience – of wildlife, habitats and the people who have advanced conservation for half a century.
